Coroner Thompson Resigns, Vacancy to Be Filled

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Skagit County Coroner Hayley Thompson announced her resignation effective September 18, 2026, before the end of her elected term, which concludes December 31, 2026. The Skagit County Democratic Party will nominate three candidates for the vacancy, with the County Commissioners scheduled to interview them on September 11. The appointed interim Coroner will serve until the November 2026 general election results are certified.

The process follows Washington state law and the state constitution, requiring the political party of the outgoing official to provide nominees. Thompson was elected as a Democrat, so the Skagit County Democratic Party must submit three names for the Commissioners' consideration. The party plans to announce its nominees on September 10. Public interviews for candidates will be held at 1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon, on September 11, with live broadcast options available.

The interim appointment will last until the November election, when voters will choose a new Coroner to serve through December 31, 2027. The new Coroner will take office once election results are certified.
