Skagit County Appoints Alex Lathum as Coroner

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Skagit County Commissioners appointed Alex Lathum to fill the vacant county coroner position on September 11, 2026.

Coroner Hayley Thompson resigned early this year, ending her elected term on December 31, 2026. The Commissioners selected Lathum from three nominees provided by the Skagit County Democrats, following state law requiring appointment from the political party of the previous officeholder. Lathum, a former lead microbiologist at the Washington Public Health Laboratory, has been volunteering in the Coroner's Office.

Lathum will serve until the November general election results are certified, after which the newly elected coroner will take office.
